Job Description

The Baltimore Sun seeks a creative and energetic editor with an audience focus to serve as the organization’s Anne Arundel County bureau chief and editor of the Capital Gazette.

In this role, the editor will collaborate with a team of journalists to develop both enterprise and breaking news coverage for a county of more than 600,000. Responsibilities will include identifying, assigning and editing news content related to Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, managing digital channels for , and implementing community engagement strategies.

This position coordinates emerging and enterprise coverage for capitalgazette.com and daily editions of the Capital Gazette.

Essential Functions

• Monitors breaking news and assigns, edits and produces daily and enterprise stories in varied formats.
• Provide support to reporters, helping them deliver strong, audience-centered journalism that is fair, accurate, and engaging.
• Program content on the Capital Gazette website.
• Curates audience engagement tools, such as programming newsletters, email, web and desktop alerts as well as posting to social media platforms.
• Uses audience analytics and news judgment to inform decisions on content assignments and engagement strategies.
• Works shifts that may include nights and/or weekends, as news dictates.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent experience.
• A minimum of 3 years of professional reporting experience (news publication and/or daily or weekly journalism experience strongly preferred).
• At least two years of experience as an editor/producer.
• Prior managerial or supervisory experience required.
• Excellent knowledge of SEO and digital strategies.
• Proven ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system.
